Amazon Rainforest experiences in Peru

Peru, the land of the Incas, is one of the best countries to explore the Amazon Rainforest in Peru. Home to one of the largest sections of the Amazon after Brazil, this side of the forest is one of the richest areas for wildlife and flora. It is what makes it one of the most incredible places in Peru for Amazon tours. This incredible life is accompanied by beautiful Amazon lakes, spectacular scenes, and one of the sectors most thought of in Amazon tourism. That is why together with Cusco Peru Travel we have thought an article about everything you have to know about the different activities in the Amazon Rainforest in Peru.

BEST EXPERIENCES IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST IN PERU

Although different jungles have been around for millions of years, recently in the last 100 years they have been exploited. It is estimated that during the last century, half of the Amazons have already been exploited. And if we don’t implement measures or something to change this, it is believed that in the next 25 years we will destroy what is left. And Peru barely has 5% of territories protected through parks and reserves. The Amazon Rainforest in Peru has two of these protected places that can be found in the southern jungle (The Manu National Park and the Tambopata Candamo Reserved Zone) while in the northern jungle you will only find one (Pacaya Samiria National Reserve).

THE SOUTHERN JUNGLE

The southern jungle is made up of several destinations that can be appreciated in a good way. Among them are Puerto Maldonado, Tambopata Candamo Reserved Zone, and Manu Biosphere Reserve. Within Puerto Maldonado, you can enjoy a jungle city very close to the Bolivian border and between the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers. Puerto Maldonado is the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon and is located very close to Cusco. Normally, most luxury Peru tours include these two destinations (Cusco and Puerto Maldonado) to make your experience a complete one.

THE NORTHERN JUNGLE

The Northern jungle is made up of Iquitos and the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. Iquitos is the northern entrance to the Peruvian Amazon. Most tour operators offer trips of up to 2 days or more where you can travel to Iquitos and enjoy and experience a mix of jungle, camping, and jungle trekking. The Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is located 120 kilometers along the main river and is not normally visited by organized tours although some local tourist agencies can help you make arrangements. Remarkably, the biological diversity that you will find in the Reserve includes animals such as Paiche fish, pink dolphins, black alligators, manatees, and much more. This is one of the most beautiful spots within the Amazon Rainforest in Peru.

EXPLORING FROM A CRUISE

If you do not want a rustic and comfortable approach, there are other possibilities to enjoy the Amazon along with the comforts of 5-star hotels. It is within the Peruvian Amazon that you can enjoy numerous exclusive ships and cruises where you can relax while enjoying the scenery. The Dolphin I is a good example of a luxury Amazon cruise, although there are numerous other options. These cruises usually cross the landscapes of one of the most virgin areas of the northern jungle, the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. You can enjoy numerous activities and experience the most amazing natural landscapes.

MONKEY ISLAND
