Puerto Maldonado

Peru has two distinct regions that you may travel to the Amazon. The first being Puerto Maldonaldo and the Tambopata National Reserve. Around an hour’s flight from the Inca City of Cusco, Maldonado is a very busy port town that has a colorful history. Once a very wealthy town with rubber the main industry, the town lost its rubber industry to Malaysia, later gold was discovered, and the town was reborn.

From Puerto Maldonado, you can travel down the Madre de Dios River to one of the many wonderful jungle lodges. Depending on your budget, there is a lodge for you. There are many more lodges in the Puerto Maldonado region and you will need to do your research, but moving on the second region of the Peruvian Amazon which is the north of the country in Iquitos.

Iquitos

Iquitos was wealthy in the 18th Century and you can see remnants of this when you visit the town. There are some old buildings that have fallen into disrepair but behind the dirt is some lovely architecture. There are few lodges in and around the town but what most people; travel to Iquitos for is the luxury Amazon Cruise.  Again, depending on your budget there are many different cruise lines to which to choose from.

The Aria Amazon

In 2015, the Aria Amazon, which first set sail in 2011, was completely refreshed with new upgrades from bed linens to state of the art lighting.
